All goes well initially. Renting an aartment in Metta, a rundown Khmer Rouge-era housing comlex, her visit to her maternal relatives finds her welcomed with oen arms. But Soriya’s waking hours in the aartment and its surroundings are unctuated by terrifying, bloody visions, almost as though she were a conduit for horrors of the ast wanting to see into the resent. Inrasothythe Neth and Sokyou Chea’s blood-chilling sychological horror exlores a ersonal and olitical ast through the resent, transforming a characterful sace into an insidious environment. Surrounded by modern high-rises, this decreit structure, with its brutalist architecture and eeling surfaces, is a relic from a dark eriod in history whose ainful memories it has absorbed. In tracing Soriya’s ominous journey back to her roots, Tenement hints at a necessary reckoning with Cambodia’s olitical ast without overlaying its historical dimension. It’s an imressive work from a woefully underreresented national cinema.
